Comparison
PIEBENCH vs ODK
ODK is open-source software for offline data collection: excellent for surveys, free to self-host, and available as the paid ODK Cloud service. PIEBENCH is a field operations platform for smart meter rollouts that adds work orders, approvals, crew attendance and HES or billing integration on top of offline capture. The right choice depends on whether you need forms or a full field operation.

The short version
| Choose PIEBENCH if… | Choose ODK if… | |
|---|---|---|
| The job | You run installations with crews, supervisors and targets | You need to collect survey data offline |
| Your team | Operations staff without developers | A technical team comfortable with XLSForm and hosting |
| Budget | A flat monthly fee from $199/month suits you | You want free self-hosting, or ODK Cloud from $199/month |
| Downstream systems | You need HES, MDM or billing sync | Exporting the data, or using the API, is enough |
About ODK
ODK is open-source software for mobile data collection. Its site says that if you are technical, you can self-host and support it for free. ODK Cloud is the same software, hosted and supported by the ODK team for a fee.
Forms work offline, on the ODK Collect Android app or in a web browser, and data syncs automatically when a connection is available. ODK lists photos, GPS locations, skip logic, calculations, external datasets and multiple languages among its form features. Forms are usually written in XLSForm, a spreadsheet format.
About PIEBENCH
PIEBENCH is a field operations platform for smart meter rollout and maintenance, built for AMISPs, installation agencies and DISCOMs. Crews use Scout, an offline-first Android app. Work is assigned as work orders, reviewed in an approval queue and tracked by crew and agency, with attendance alongside it. Connectorly sends approved data to HES, MDM and billing systems.

ODK Cloud's plans are also limited by submissions: Standard includes 10,000 a month and Professional 25,000, according to its site. On a large installation programme, check that number against your expected jobs per month.
Where the difference shows up in a rollout
ODK is very good at what it was built for. If you need 50 surveyors to collect consumer details offline across a district, it will do the job, and the self-hosted version costs nothing but your team's time.
A smart meter rollout needs more than collection, though. Jobs have to be assigned to crews. Someone has to check each installation before it counts, and send it back with a note when the seal photo is unreadable. A meter serial that was already used should be refused. The AMISP wants installs per agency every morning, and the HES needs to hear about every new meter. With ODK, those parts are yours to build or run in other tools. With PIEBENCH, they are part of the product.
Evidence works differently too. ODK will happily store a photo and a GPS point with each form. What it won't do out of the box, as far as its site shows, is refuse a meter serial already used elsewhere in the project, or hold a job in a queue until a supervisor has looked at it. On a rollout, those two checks prevent a lot of rework.
There is also the question of who maintains it. An XLSForm and a self-hosted server suit an organisation with technical staff. An installation agency with supervisors and technicians, and no developers, usually needs something it can change through a form builder.
When to choose ODK instead
Choose ODK if you mainly need offline surveys, such as a one-off consumer survey before a tender. It also fits a team with the skills to self-host it for free, or an organisation that already uses ODK for other programmes and only needs to collect data, without work orders, approvals or crew management.
When to choose PIEBENCH
Choose PIEBENCH if you need to assign and track installation jobs across crews and agencies, approve or reject work with photo and serial evidence, monitor attendance, and sync the results to your HES or billing system, all without building those pieces yourself. Questions buyers ask
Can ODK be used for smart meter installation?
ODK can collect installation data offline, including photos and GPS. What it does not list is the operations around that: work orders, supervisor approvals, duplicate-serial checks, attendance and integration with HES or billing. You would build or source those separately. PIEBENCH includes them for smart meter work.
Is ODK free?
ODK is open source and free to self-host if you have the technical skills. ODK Cloud, the hosted version, was listed from $199 a month for the Standard plan as of 29 October 2026, with Professional at $499 and Enterprise priced on request.
Do both PIEBENCH and ODK work offline?
Yes. ODK Collect and PIEBENCH's Scout app both capture data without a connection and sync when it returns. ODK also offers web forms. Scout is Android-only and is designed for low-end phones used with gloves and in bright sun.
Which is easier for a non-technical team to set up?
PIEBENCH, for most installation agencies. Its form builder is point-and-click, and the Meter Installation and Consumer Indexing templates are ready to use. ODK forms are usually written as XLSForm spreadsheets, and self-hosting needs someone to run a server.
Which one handles supervisor approvals?
PIEBENCH has an approval queue where supervisors approve jobs or reject them with a note, and auto-approval rules on the Pro plan. Approvals are not listed among ODK's features on its site.
Can I import data collected in ODK into PIEBENCH?
Yes, as service points. If you ran a consumer survey in ODK, export the results and import them into PIEBENCH by CSV, then use them as the starting point for installation work orders.
