Smart meter rollouts by country: global tracker

Last updated

This page tracks national smart meter rollouts from official sources: the latest installed figures, the target each country has set and the date of the next data release. It covers Great Britain, the United States, Germany, Australia and India so far, and each country page lists its sources so you can check every number.

Why the percentages don't line up

Each country measures its rollout differently, so a higher percentage does not always mean a more advanced rollout:

  • Great Britain counts smart and advanced meters as a share of all gas and electricity meters, and reports how many smart meters are actually communicating ("smart mode").
  • The United States counts advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) meters as a share of all electricity meters. Remotely read AMR meters are counted separately and are not included.
  • Germany counts intelligent metering systems (iMSys) with a communicating gateway. Digital meters without a gateway (mME) don't count. The legal targets are measured against the mandatory cases, not all meters.
  • Australia sets a deadline for replacing legacy meters rather than publishing a national count.
  • India reports against the meters sanctioned under RDSS. The figure above counts meters that are communicating, not just installed.

We show each figure the way its source defines it and link that source on the country page.

What the rollouts have in common

Whatever the policy, every rollout ends up as the same field work: survey, install, verify, commission and fix the meters that stop communicating. That is what PIEBENCH is built for. See the smart meter field operations platform.

Questions buyers ask

Which country has the most smart meters installed?

Of the countries tracked here, the United States has the most, with 147.1 million AMI meters in 2025 according to the EIA. Great Britain had about 42 million smart and advanced meters at the end of June 2026.

Why are smart meter percentages hard to compare between countries?

Each country defines its count differently. The US counts AMI meters, Great Britain counts smart and advanced gas and electricity meters, and Germany counts only meters with a communicating gateway. The tracker shows each figure as its source defines it.

How often is this tracker updated?

Each country is checked when its official source publishes new data: quarterly for Great Britain, half-yearly for Germany and yearly for the United States. Each page shows the date it was last checked.
