The best field service app for meter installation, compared

Last updated

For smart meter installation, the right field app depends on how much of the metering workflow you want ready-made. PIEBENCH is built for meter installation, consumer indexing and NCM work. Spoors is a configurable field automation platform for many industries. ODK is open-source data collection. Spreadsheets cost nothing up front but break down at rollout scale.

How we compared. PIEBENCH is our product, so read this with that in mind. Competitor details come only from their public websites as checked on 29 October 2026, and we link to each source. We have not tested competitors' products hands-on. If something here is out of date, tell us and we will correct it.

The short version

OptionBest forMain trade-off
PIEBENCHAMISPs, installation agencies and DISCOMs running smart meter rolloutsBuilt for metering, so it is narrower than a general field platform
SpoorsCompanies automating several kinds of field work (sales, collections, service) on one platformMetering workflows have to be configured; utilities aren't among the industries it lists
ODKSurveys and data collection, especially with a technical team that can self-hostNo work orders, approvals or crew management listed
Excel and WhatsAppVery small pilotsNo proof, no live progress, and errors multiply with every copy

Who each option suits

PIEBENCH suits teams whose work is smart meters: installation and replacement, consumer indexing, NCM visits and new connections. Templates for installation and indexing come ready, along with approvals, duplicate-serial checks, attendance and integration with HES, MDM and billing. Plans start at $199/month, and the price is a flat monthly fee with users included.

Spoors suits a business with many types of field work that wants one configurable platform for all of it. Its website lists industries such as BFSI and NBFC, manufacturing, agriculture, retail, healthcare and telecom, and it offers a no-code workflow builder and offline mobile apps on Android and iOS.

ODK suits organisations that mainly need offline forms and survey data, such as a one-off consumer survey. It is open source: free to self-host if you have the technical staff, or available as the paid ODK Cloud service.

Spreadsheets and WhatsApp suit the first few days of a pilot and not much after. They are what most teams are moving away from, which is why they are on this list.

"Not listed" means we could not find the feature on the vendor's public site. It does not mean the product can't do it.

What to check before you choose

Whichever app you shortlist, run the same test. Put a low-end Android phone in airplane mode, complete a meter replacement with the old meter's final reading, a scanned serial, seal numbers and photos, then reconnect and watch what reaches the office. Then try to submit the same serial twice. Ten minutes of that tells you more than any feature table, and it costs nothing to ask for.

After that, ask how the data reaches your HES or billing system, who has to build that connection, and what happens to the price when you go from a pilot of 10 technicians to a rollout of 200.

When not to choose PIEBENCH

Be honest about fit. PIEBENCH is probably not your best option if:

  • Most of your field work isn't metering, for example sales visits, loan collections or general maintenance. A general platform like Spoors is built for that range.
  • You only need a one-off survey and have staff who can self-host and maintain ODK.
  • Your crews need an iOS app. Scout runs on Android.
  • You are already deep in a large enterprise field service suite and the metering work is a small part of it.

Questions buyers ask

What is the best field service app for meter installation in India?

If the work is smart meter installation, consumer indexing or NCM visits, choose an app built for metering, with offline capture, barcode serials, photo and GPS proof, approvals and HES integration. PIEBENCH is built for exactly this. General platforms like Spoors, or ODK for data collection, can work if you are ready to configure the metering workflows yourself.

Which smart meter field apps work offline?

PIEBENCH, Spoors and ODK all state that their mobile apps work offline and sync when a connection returns. Test it yourself: complete a full job in airplane mode on a low-end Android phone, then reconnect and check that every photo and reading reached the office intact.

Is there a cheap field workforce app for installation agencies in India?

Several field apps publish their prices. PIEBENCH publishes a flat monthly fee with users included, and has a free trial. Spoors lists plans from $12 a month. ODK is free if you self-host it. Compare the total at your peak crew size, not at pilot size.

Can I use ODK or Excel for a smart meter rollout?

For a small survey, yes. For a rollout, both run out of road. Excel has no proof attached to each job and no live progress. ODK collects data offline well, but it does not list work orders, approvals or crew management, so those have to be handled elsewhere.

Which field apps integrate with HES or billing systems?

PIEBENCH includes Connectorly, which connects over REST, OAuth or SQL and is built to integrate with SAP IS-U and Oracle CC&B-style systems. Spoors lists API integration and webhooks on its Enterprise plan, and ODK lists API access on its Professional plan, so the integration work is yours to build.

Does PIEBENCH have an iOS app?

No. Scout, the field app, runs on Android 7.0 and later, which covers the phones most installation crews carry. Supervisors and office staff use the web console from any browser.
