Who it’s for

DISCOM smart metering project management, with evidence behind every number

Last updated

PIEBENCH helps DISCOM project teams manage smart metering work they don't do themselves. Every installation, indexing survey and NCM visit by the AMISP's crews carries photos, GPS, scanned serials and an approval history, so the progress figure a DISCOM receives can be traced to individual jobs. The same platform also runs the DISCOM's own O&M field work.

The DISCOM's position in a smart meter rollout

Under RDSS, the DISCOM signs the contract and the AMISP does the metering, usually through installation agencies. The DISCOM still owns the outcome. Consumers call the DISCOM when a meter is wrong, the regulator asks the DISCOM about progress, and the energy accounting the scheme is meant to deliver lands on the DISCOM's books.

That leaves project teams in an awkward spot: accountable for work they can't see directly, reported in spreadsheets they didn't prepare.

What a DISCOM project team needs to see

Progress that holds up. Installed against sanctioned quantity, by division and by agency. Not a weekly number someone typed, but a count built from individual jobs.

Proof behind a disputed job. When a consumer says no meter was installed, or the wrong one was, the team needs the job record: photos, location, serials, time, who did it and who approved it.

Quality, not just volume. Rejection rates by agency and the reasons for them say more about a rollout than the install count does.

Indexing and NCMs. Whether every consumer is mapped to the right DT and feeder, and how many installed meters still aren't communicating.

How PIEBENCH provides it

What the DISCOM needsWhere it comes from in PIEBENCH
Verified progressEach job has an approval status; Smart Views give approved, pending and rejected counts
Evidence per installationTimestamped photos, GPS with accuracy, barcode serials, seal numbers, plus any step you add, such as a consumer confirmation
Data qualityDuplicate meter serials refused within a project; required fields
Agency performanceJobs tied to technician, team and contractor; rejection notes show the reasons
Indexing coverageService points move from imported to indexed to installed
NCM follow-upHES lists pulled in as work orders through Connectorly
Who did whatSeven roles and a full audit trail

DISCOM staff join the AMISP's PIEBENCH account as users with a reviewer role on the projects they oversee. They can review field work and approve or reject it, without seeing anything outside those projects.

Running the DISCOM's own field work

Not everything is outsourced. Most DISCOMs keep their own teams for O&M, complaints, new connections, and disconnection and reconnection cases that need a visit. PIEBENCH runs these on the same platform, with the same offline app, approval queue and attendance:

  • New connections: applicant details, site photos and documents captured at the premises, with status visible to the office.
  • NCM visits: non-communicating meters assigned by area, with the fault found and action taken recorded. See NCM resolution.
  • Disconnection and reconnection: field cases for prepaid meters that remote commands can't close. See disconnection and reconnection.
  • Attendance: selfie and GPS check-in for field staff, and geofenced check-in for office staff if you want it. See field attendance.

Connecting to the systems you already run

DISCOM data lives in billing (often SAP IS-U or Oracle CC&B), the HES and the MDM. Connectorly reads consumers and meters from them and sends approved field results back, over REST, OAuth 2.0, SQL or webhooks. See integrations.

Getting started

A DISCOM can start with one division and one type of work, such as NCM visits by its own O&M staff, on the free trial. Paid plans start at ₹4,999/month; Pro adds integrations, auto-approval rules and the workflow builder. Enterprise adds a dedicated instance, which some DISCOMs prefer for data residency and control. See pricing.

Questions buyers ask

How can a DISCOM track smart meter rollout progress across AMISPs?

Base progress on individual approved jobs rather than reported totals. In PIEBENCH, each installation carries photos, GPS, scanned serials and an approval status, and is tied to the agency and crew that did it, so approved, pending and rejected counts can be broken down by agency.

What should a smart meter MIS dashboard for a DISCOM show?

Installed against sanctioned quantity by division and agency, approved versus pending versus rejected, top rejection reasons, indexing coverage, and the count of non-communicating meters. In PIEBENCH these come from Smart Views built on the live job data rather than a weekly upload.

Can a DISCOM verify an AMISP's installations?

Yes, if the installations are recorded with evidence. Every PIEBENCH installation stores timestamped photos, a GPS fix with accuracy, barcode serials and seal numbers, with the approval history in the audit trail. DISCOM staff can be given a reviewer role on the AMISP's projects to check it themselves.

Can PIEBENCH run a DISCOM's own O&M work too?

Yes. New connections, NCM visits, disconnection and reconnection cases and complaints can all run on the same platform as installation, with the same offline app, approval queue and attendance.

How does smart prepaid meter rollout tracking work in India?

DISCOMs track sanctioned versus installed meters, how many are communicating, and how many are in prepaid mode. Field platforms like PIEBENCH supply the installation and NCM side: what was installed, where, by whom, with evidence, and which meters still need a visit.

Can a DISCOM have its own dedicated instance?

Yes, on the Enterprise plan. It includes a dedicated instance, white-labelling, custom integrations and features, guided onboarding and dedicated support. Pricing is on request.
